Serlupi-Crescenzi's
Family History
 |
The Serlupis (Sirwolf) are an illustrious Roman family, whose
history dates back to the 13th century. In 1661, Francesco Serlupi
inherited the name Crescenzi from his father-in-law, Ottaviano
Crescenzi, and was thus the primogeniture of the Crescenzi family.
He obtained the right to add Crescenzi to his surname (Serlupi) by
Pope Urban VIII. By doing this, he continued the papal |
lineage of the Crescenzi, whose history dates back to the 10th
century.
The Crescenzis (Crescent moon)
were one
of the most powerful families in the Middle Ages in Rome. In that time,
influential families usually had ascendancy over a restricted area of
Rome, for example, the Cenci family dominated the area around the
present Piazza de' Cenci. On the
contrary, the Crescenzi family had no geographical limit to their power.
The
first record of the Crescenzi lineage goes back to Crescenzio Anicio
Nomentano, senator of Rome, and his cousin, the
bishop of Narni, who became Pope John XIII in 965.
Crescenzi is a very common surname, even in the United States. In fact,
the family branched out into several regions of Italy, and most notably
in Apulia. |
